NG Tube Care at Home in Lahore

Feeding through a tube is safe when the position is checked first and the patient is sat up. Our nurses give the prescribed feeds, flushes and medicines, keep the nostril skin intact, and teach whoever will be doing it between visits.

NG Tube Care at Home

Your nurse follows the feeding plan from your doctor or dietitian, including the type and amount of feed, timings and water flushes. Before each use, the tube’s marked length at the nostril is checked and a small sample of stomach fluid is tested with pH paper where possible. Feeds are given slowly with the patient sitting up, and medicines are given one at a time with flushes between.

Services Include

Goal

To give feeds, fluids and medicines through the NG tube safely and on time, helping protect the lungs, skin and nutrition of patients who cannot swallow.

The One Check That Matters Most

An NG tube can move. A bout of coughing or retching, or a patient half-pulling at the tape in the night, can lift the tip out of the stomach and into the food pipe or worse. Feed that goes in then is not nutrition, it is a chest infection. So before anything is given, the marked length at the nostril is compared with the record, and where possible stomach fluid is tested on pH paper.

Giving the Feed Safely

The patient sits up at thirty to forty-five degrees and stays up for half an hour afterwards, because feeding a flat patient is asking for reflux. The feed goes in slowly, by gravity or by syringe, at the volume the dietitian set. Coughing, a wet-sounding voice or a sudden struggle to breathe means the feed stops immediately and the position is checked again.

Flushing and Medicines

A tube blocks because somebody poured a crushed tablet into it and did not flush afterwards. Water goes in before the feed, after the feed, and between each medicine, in the amount the plan allows. Medicines are given one at a time, in liquid form where it exists, and never mixed together in the same syringe to save a step.

Who Is Fed

Patients Who Cannot Swallow Safely

The feeding plan comes from your doctor or dietitian. We follow the volumes and the timings it states.

After a Stroke

Patients who choke on fluids while swallowing slowly returns.

Brain Injury

Head injury and surgery patients who cannot take food by mouth.

Parkinson’s and Motor Disease

Progressive illness where swallowing has become unsafe.

Cancer of the Throat

Patients during treatment who cannot eat enough to hold weight.

Severe Weakness

Very frail patients taking only a few spoonfuls a day.

Tube Out or Blocked

Families whose tube has come out or will not flush.

Tube Protocol

Nothing is poured into a tube on trust. The position is checked, the plan is read, the water is measured. Where the tube has moved, we do not reposition it and hope: it is replaced on your doctor’s advice, or the patient is reviewed.

Each Feed Round

  1. Patient sat up — thirty to forty-five degrees, propped properly rather than slumped sideways.
  2. Position confirmed — the marked length at the nostril is checked against the record, and stomach fluid tested on pH paper where possible.
  3. Flush, feed, flush — water before, the prescribed volume given slowly, water after.
  4. Medicines one by one — each given separately with a flush between, in a form suited to the tube.

Skin and tape — the nostril is checked for soreness and the tape renewed before the nurse writes the round up.

Tube Feeding for Elderly Patients at Home

Weight, dignity and a quiet routine

Families often feel they have failed when a parent stops eating and a tube goes in. In practice it is frequently what stops the weight loss and the repeated chest infections from food going the wrong way. Our nurses keep the routine calm and unhurried, sit with the patient through the feed rather than leaving a syringe hanging, and keep the mouth clean, which matters even when nothing goes through it.
Swallowing sometimes comes back, and assessment and exercises for that sit with speech therapy. Where the patient is also bedbound, the turning and hygiene side is covered under bedridden patient care.

FAQs

NG Tube Care FAQs

Questions about feeding through an NG tube at home.

Are feeds given in visits or on a shift?

Feeds are usually given in rounds through the day, so visits fit better than shifts for a stable patient. Where feeds run overnight, or where the patient pulls at the tube and needs watching, twelve-hour cover is safer than leaving a relative to manage the small hours alone.
One nurse per round. A patient who is restless or cannot be sat up without help may need two for the feed itself, and we would rather send a second nurse than feed someone who is slumped. For shift cover it is two nurses, one per shift.
The prescribed feed, the giving syringes, pH paper if your doctor supplied it, and clean drinking water for flushes. Somewhere to prop the patient up properly matters more than people expect, so a backrest or firm pillows make the difference between a safe feed and a rushed one.
Yes for a tube that has come out, will not flush, or where feeds are overdue, all of which we treat as urgent. For planned feeding support, the first visit is usually arranged the next morning, once the plan has been read and the feed is in the house.
Yes. Tube feeding does not expose the patient the way personal care does, so many families are content either way, but the preference is recorded and met where a nurse is free. It matters more where the same nurse will also be washing the patient.
By the visit, with the rate depending on how many feed rounds are included and whether a tube replacement is needed. Passing a new tube is a procedure and priced separately. Feeds and syringes come from your pharmacy, and the coordinator says what is included.
The coordinator sends a replacement for that round. A relief nurse reads the feeding plan and the recorded tube length before she starts, because the mark at the nostril is the only way to know the tube has not moved since the last feed.
Yes, and they are assigned where the patient also has a tracheostomy, needs suction, or came home from critical care on feeds. For a stable patient on a simple feeding routine, a general nurse trained in tube feeding is the right person.
