POP & Orthopaedic Back Slab Care in Lahore

The bone is the easy part. What needs watching is the limb inside the plaster: the colour of the toes, the swelling, the skin at the edges and the heel underneath. Our nurses check all of it and report changes early.

Cast and Back Slab Care at Home

The nurse checks the fingers or toes for colour, warmth, swelling, feeling and movement, and compares them with the other side. Plaster edges are checked for rubbing, cracks or softening, and pressure areas such as heels, elbows and the back are inspected. If the bandage over a back slab is too tight, the nurse loosens and rewraps it as your doctor’s instructions allow, without removing the slab.

Services Include

Goal

To help the bone heal safely inside its cast or back slab by catching circulation problems, swelling and pressure sores early, while keeping the patient comfortable.

What Can Go Wrong Under Plaster

A broken limb swells, and plaster does not stretch. If the swelling builds inside a tight cast it squeezes the blood vessels and the nerves, and the first signs are pain out of proportion to the injury, pins and needles, and fingers or toes that are pale, cold or dusky. Left alone, that damages muscle and nerve permanently. Caught in time, it is usually settled by splitting or rewrapping.

The Five-Minute Limb Check

Every visit begins the same way: colour, warmth, swelling, sensation and movement in the exposed fingers or toes, compared with the other side rather than judged alone. The nurse asks about pain, pins and needles and any burning spot under the plaster, and presses a nail bed to see how fast the colour returns. All of it is written down, so a slow change over three days is visible.

Skin, Edges and Pressure Points

Plaster rubs where it ends. The nurse checks the edges for cracking and sharpness, pads them where needed, and looks at the heel, the elbow and the base of the spine on a patient who is spending the day in bed. A back slab’s bandage is checked for tightness and rewrapped within your doctor’s instructions, without disturbing the slab.

Who Needs Checks

Patients in a Cast or Slab

Checks matter most in the first days after plastering, when swelling is usually at its worst.

New Back Slabs

The first days after plastering, when swelling peaks.

Wrist and Ankle Fractures

Elderly patients after a fall, with a cast on a thin limb.

Leg Casts

Patients who cannot walk and must keep the limb raised.

Children in Plaster

Young patients who will not report numbness clearly.

Bedbound Patients

Pressure sore risk at the heel and under the slab.

Long Journey to Clinic

Families for whom a routine check means a painful trip.

Plaster Checks

Nurses do not plaster, trim or remove casts, and nobody at home should. What we do is look at the limb often enough that a problem is caught on day two rather than day six, and get your orthopaedic doctor involved while it is still reversible.

What Each Visit Covers

  1. The patient is asked — pain, numbness, tingling, or a spot that burns or itches under the plaster.
  2. The limb is checked — colour, warmth, swelling, feeling and movement in the exposed digits, against the other side.
  3. The plaster is checked — edges, cracks, softening, and whether a back slab bandage has tightened.
  4. Position corrected — the limb is raised on pillows above heart level and the patient repositioned.

Reported — anything that has changed since the last visit goes to your orthopaedic doctor the same day.

Cast Care for Elderly Patients After a Fall

A thin limb inside hard plaster

An older patient’s skin bruises under a cast edge within a day, and a wrist in plaster after a fall often means the other hand has to do everything. Our nurses pad the edges, help with washing and dressing so the plaster stays dry, and keep an eye on the heel and the hip on the side the patient now favours, because that is where the next problem starts.
Once the plaster is off, stiffness and weakness are the real battle, and that work sits with fracture rehabilitation. Where a patient cannot get out of bed while the fracture heals, see bedridden patient care.

FAQs

POP & Orthopaedic Back Slab Care FAQs

Questions about looking after a cast or back slab.

How often should a plaster be checked?

Plaster checks are short visits, daily for the first two or three days while swelling peaks and then less often. Shift nursing comes in only where the fracture has left the patient unable to get out of bed, and the plaster is the smaller half of what they need.
One nurse per check. The comparison between the injured side and the other one is the whole examination, and a single nurse who saw yesterday’s colour and swelling judges it better than two taking turns. The readings are written down for whoever comes next.
Firm pillows to keep the limb above heart level, plastic sheeting or a cover for washing, and the prescribed pain relief. Have the clinic’s plaster instructions to hand. Nothing should be pushed inside the cast to scratch, however bad the itch, and no cream applied at the edges.
Yes, and a limb that is painful, numb or changing colour inside a plaster is urgent rather than routine. Say that clearly when you call. If the toes or fingers are already pale, blue or cold, go to hospital now and do not wait for a nurse.
Yes. Most of this examination involves only the fingers or toes, so either nurse suits, but washing a patient with a leg or hip cast is personal care and many families prefer the same gender. Mention it when the visit is booked.
Per visit, and these are short visits, so the rate is lower than for procedures such as dressings or catheter changes. A course of daily checks for the first week is quoted as a block. Padding and bandages for a back slab rewrap are included.
Another nurse is sent for that check, with the previous readings in front of her, because the point of the check is the comparison. If the first days after plastering are the ones at stake, we do not let a check slip simply because a rota changed.
Yes, though plaster care does not call for one. Where a patient has multiple injuries after an accident, or is home from critical care with a fracture among other problems, a nurse with that experience is assigned. Send the discharge summary when you book.
