Someone Beside Them
An elderly patient attendant is a trained, non-clinical helper who stays with a frail or unwell older person for a full shift. The defining feature is presence: twelve hours by day, twelve hours overnight, or continuous cover using both. Within that shift the attendant takes the physical weight of care, lifting and steadying your parent between bed, chair, commode and washroom, walking with them, feeding them unhurriedly and watching over them while they rest.
It is different from help with the daily routine, which is booked by the hour. An attendant is booked because somebody must be within reach at every moment, usually because a parent has become unsteady, gets up repeatedly at night, or is weak after an illness, a fall or a hospital stay and would come to harm alone.

A hand on the walker or wheelchair for every movement around the house.
Relief for a husband or wife who can no longer lift, turn and watch alone.
An attendant who travels with your parent to check-ups and stays through the wait.

Choosing by presence and by skill
For a few hours of help with washing, meals and company, elderly home care is the cheaper and better fit. For insulin, dressings, catheters or monitoring, add elderly nursing care. Where confusion and wandering are the real problem, ask about dementia care.
Dedicated recovery support through the weeks after an operation.
Therapy aimed at movement, balance and speech following a stroke.
Repositioning, skin care and hygiene for a parent who cannot move.
A qualified nurse for the clinical work an attendant cannot do.
A PMDC-registered doctor who comes out to see your parent.
Doctor reviews in the fortnight after discharge, when setbacks are common.
Blood taken at home, sparing a frail elder the journey.
Prescribed fluids or antibiotics infused under nurse supervision.
