We agree shift times with your family, then assign regular day and night carers so the patient gets to know them. Each shift begins and ends with a face-to-face handover and a written log covering medicines, meals, fluids, toileting, sleep and anything unusual. A supervising nurse reviews the logs and can add nursing visits if the patient’s needs increase.

Which Hours Does Your Family Need Covered?

This service is chosen by the clock rather than by diagnosis. Families book a day shift when everyone works or studies and the patient cannot be left alone until evening. They book a night shift when a relative has been sitting up for weeks and is close to collapse. They book both when the patient needs someone within reach at every hour.

What Is Different at Night

Nights have their own problems. Patients get confused after dark, need the washroom repeatedly, become breathless lying flat, or pull at drips and catheters in their sleep. Falls are far more likely on an unlit walk to the bathroom at three in the morning. A night carer stays awake, keeps a small light on and the path clear, and is there before the patient stands.

What Happens at Shift Change

The carer going off duty waits for the one coming on and briefs them at the bedside: what was eaten and drunk, which medicines were given and when, how the patient slept, what hurt, and anything the family or doctor said. The written log goes across with them, so nothing rests on memory, and a family member is welcome to listen.

Our Approach

The weak point in shift care is the gap between one carer leaving and the next arriving. No shift here ends before its replacement is in the room, and every handover is spoken at the bedside and written into the log before the outgoing carer goes home.

Setting the Shift Pattern

Hours worked out — which parts of the day your family already covers, and which are left exposed.
Pattern chosen — day only, night only, both as two twelve-hour shifts, or a live-in carer.
Regular carers assigned — the same day carer and the same night carer, so the patient is not meeting strangers at midnight.
Log set up — medicines, meals, fluids, toileting, sleep and anything unusual, recorded every shift.

Reviewed as needs change — a supervising nurse reads the logs and adds nursing visits, or drops a shift, as the patient’s condition moves.

Common questions about day, night and round-the-clock cover.

What times do the shifts run?

Shifts are normally twelve hours, 8am to 8pm and 8pm to 8am, and you can book either or both. The outgoing carer stays until the incoming one arrives and hands over at the bedside. Different start times can be arranged where your household runs on a different clock.

Is it one carer or two for round-the-clock cover?

Two, if you want genuine round-the-clock cover, because no carer stays alert for twenty-four hours. One per shift is the rule. A live-in carer is a different arrangement: one person who stays in the house, sleeps there and takes agreed rest breaks, which suits a stable patient who needs help rather than constant watching.

What does the family need to set up?

Somewhere for the carer to sit and wash their hands, and for a night shift, a chair or bed near the patient. A small night light, a clear path to the washroom and a bell or phone within the patient’s reach matter more at night than any equipment.

Can a night shift start tonight?

Night shifts are the request we hear most often at short notice, and we can frequently cover the same evening. Call or WhatsApp with the patient’s condition, the hours you need and your area, and the coordinator will confirm whether tonight is possible while you are on the phone.

Can we have a different carer on each shift?

Yes, and you can ask for different staff on different shifts. Some families want a female carer through the day for bathing and a male carer at night for lifting. Tell us the preference for each shift when you book.

How are shift charges worked out?

The shift pattern drives the price. A night shift is not rated the same as a day shift, round-the-clock cover is two shifts rather than one long one, and live-in care is quoted separately. Whether the work needs an attendant, a caregiver or a nurse also changes it.

What if a carer cannot make their shift?

Call the coordinator rather than the carer, and do it as early as you can for a night shift. A relief carer is briefed from the shift log beforehand, and no shift is left to start without someone in it.

Do you have ICU-trained nurses for night shifts?

Yes. Where the night involves oxygen, suction, a tracheostomy or close monitoring, the shift is covered by a qualified or ICU-trained nurse rather than a caregiver. Tell us at booking what equipment is in use at home.
