Before the visit, we collect copies of prescriptions, lab results, scans and discharge summaries so the specialist can prepare. The consultation takes place at the bedside or, where a physical examination is less critical, by video. Afterwards, you receive written recommendations, and our team can coordinate any tests, nursing care or a follow-up review with the same specialist.

When Is a Specialist Opinion Worth It?

Ask for a specialist when the problem has a name but is not behaving, or when it has no name at all. Heart failure that keeps swelling the ankles. Chest infections that return every few weeks. Parkinson’s disease that has changed. Kidney numbers drifting the wrong way. Diabetes that will not settle on three medicines. Ask also before a large decision: surgery, dialysis, a long course of steroids, or stopping a treatment.

Which Specialties We Can Arrange

Availability changes week to week, so the coordinator confirms before you book rather than promising in advance. We most often arrange heart, lung, kidney, hormone and diabetes, brain and nerve, joint, skin and elderly-medicine specialists, and psychiatrists through our counselling service. If the specialty you need is not one we can reach, we will say so plainly instead of sending a general doctor in their place.

Limits of a Home Specialist Visit

A specialist at the bedside can take a history, examine, read the scans you already have and give an opinion. They cannot perform an endoscopy, an angiogram, a biopsy or an operation in your living room, and some opinions genuinely need imaging done first. Where that is the case, the specialist will tell you which test to get and where, then review it with you.

Questions families ask before booking a specialist opinion.

How soon can a specialist consultation be arranged?

Specialist appointments are arranged ahead rather than on demand, usually within a few days, because consultants have hospital commitments. Evening slots are often easier to get than daytime ones. If a question cannot wait that long, book a doctor home visit first and keep the specialist review for afterwards.

Will more than one specialist see the patient?

One specialist attends. Where the case crosses two fields, say a kidney problem in a diabetic patient, we will tell you which opinion to get first rather than sending two consultants to the same room on the same day and letting you work out how they disagree.

What records should we send before the visit?

The file. Old prescriptions, every blood result, scan reports and the actual films or discs if you have them, plus the discharge summaries. Missing records are the single most common reason an opinion ends up hedged, so send whatever you have in advance rather than on the day.

Can a specialist come today?

Not usually, and we will not pretend otherwise. Specialist availability is booked ahead. For something urgent tonight, a general doctor can visit, or your relative should be assessed in hospital, and the specialist can review afterwards with the test results in hand.

Can we ask for a male or female specialist?

Yes, tell us your preference when you book. The pool of specialists in any one field is smaller than the pool of general doctors, so matching the specialty and the gender preference together sometimes takes a few days longer. We will explain the trade-off rather than decide it for you.

How much more does a specialist cost?

A specialist consultation costs more than a general home visit, and the fee varies by field and by whether the consultation is at home or by video. Tests and medicines are separate. You are quoted the figure before the appointment is confirmed.

What if the specialist has to postpone?

Call 03176364604. Consultants do get held up in theatre or on the ward. We would rather move your appointment than send a different doctor who has not read the file, and we will offer you a new time the same day.

Can a specialist start treatment at home?

No. A specialist opinion is a consultation, not a treatment service. If the specialist finds something that needs admission, an urgent scan or intravenous treatment under observation, they will say so, and we will help you get to hospital rather than start it at home.
