Caregiver / Aya Services at Home

Your caregiver learns the patient’s routine and preferences in the first days: preferred bathing time, favourite foods, prayer times and how they like to be dressed. They prepare simple meals suited to the patient’s diet, wash the patient’s clothes and bedding, and keep a daily note of food, fluids, toileting and mood for the family and supervising nurse.

What Does a Caregiver or Aya Do?

A caregiver, or aya as most Lahore families say, takes over a patient’s personal care and daily routine. That means bathing or a bed bath, brushing teeth or cleaning dentures, washing and combing hair, cutting nails, dressing, changing adult diapers and pads, helping with meals, and keeping the patient’s clothes, bedding and room clean. It is the work families find hardest to keep up over weeks.

Caregiver, Attendant or Nurse

An attendant helps a patient move, eat and stay safe, but stops short of intimate care. A caregiver takes that on: bathing, changing, toileting and everything that goes with it. A nurse handles treatment, so injections, drips, wound dressing and catheter changes stay with nursing staff. Plenty of patients need two of these roles at once, and the care plan records which tasks belong to whom.

How Personal Care Is Done

The door is closed, the body stays covered except for the part being washed, and nobody else is in the room unless the patient wants them there. Gloves go on for toileting and changes, skin folds are dried properly to prevent rashes and sores, and hands are washed between tasks. The patient is told what is happening before it happens.

Questions families ask before booking personal care at home.

How many hours a day does personal care take?

Caregivers work daily visits of a few hours, twelve-hour day or night shifts, or live-in care. Most families start with a morning visit for bathing and breakfast, then add hours as needs grow. A night shift suits patients who need changing or help to the washroom after dark.

Is it one caregiver or two?

One caregiver at a time for personal care. A nurse is separate and visits only for clinical tasks such as injections, wound dressing or a catheter change. Two carers together are needed only where one person cannot roll or lift the patient safely, which the assessment confirms.

What supplies should we keep at home?

Diapers or pads, wipes, soap, barrier cream, a basin and towels, and fresh clothes and bedding. Keep a few days of supplies in the house so a change never has to wait. If you have a commode, shower chair or air mattress, tell us so the plan uses them.

Can a caregiver start today?

Often yes, though personal care goes better when the caregiver has met the patient first. Call or WhatsApp with the help needed, whether you want a female aya, and your area, and the coordinator will say what can be arranged tonight and what is better tomorrow.

Can we ask for a female aya?

Yes, and for personal care it is the first thing we ask. A female aya for a female patient is the most common request in Lahore, and male caregivers are available for male patients and where lifting is heavy.

How are caregiver and aya charges worked out?

Charges depend on the hours, whether it is daily visits, a full shift or live-in care, and how heavy the work is. Live-in care is quoted separately, because sleeping space, meals and rest breaks have to be agreed first. You get the rate before care starts.

What if our caregiver cannot come?

Call the coordinator. A relief caregiver is briefed from the daily notes, including bathing times, the continence routine and food preferences, so the patient is not left explaining personal habits to a stranger.

What if the patient also needs nursing?

Nursing is a separate role. Where a patient needs injections, a catheter, wound dressing, oxygen or close monitoring alongside personal care, a qualified nurse is booked for those hours and the caregiver keeps the daily routine. An ICU-trained nurse is arranged where monitoring is continuous.
